Celebrities Who Have Had Cosmetic Dentistry Done

With plenty of celebrities sporting the latest haircuts, fashion trends and even cosmetic enhancements, it’s hard for the rest of the world to keep up with their ever-changing styles. But there’s one temporary trend that once the change is made, is permanent. Cosmetic dentistry.

In recent years, show business has seen stars such as Tom Cruise and Gwen Stefani modelling orthodontic treatment, taking something as unpopular as braces and turning it into a glamorous dental accessory. But thanks to advances in the dentistry world such as Invisalign and porcelain veneers, the perfect smile can be achieved in literally a manner ofweeks. From cosmetic bonding to gum contouring, there is a dental solution for everyone – and celebrities are taking full advantage of this “instant orthodontics.”

Who has had their teeth done?

An example of instant orthodontics evident within television is ITV’s ‘The X-Factor’. Whilst the contestants are ultimately the ones seeking stardom, it’s the celebrity judges that are the real stars of the show. Low angle shots and extreme close-ups means that every physical flaw will be magnified, and no matter how progressed camera trickery and special effects are; no technology on television can straighten a smile. Which is why Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and more recently Louis Walsh – have corrected their teeth with the help of porcelain veneers.

New York-based cosmetic dentist Dr Lee Gause explained that many celebrities are undergoing porcelain veneers as a quick but expensive solution for perfect teeth, but says that it’s just a part of show business. “Most of the people you see with perfect smiles in Hollywood have porcelain veneers,” he said. “It’s almost mandatory for people who take a lot of pictures.” With a price tag in the region of £300 to £500 per veneer it doesn’t come cheap, but fixing a combination of dental problems such as size, crookedness, spacing and colour through one orthodontic solution has resulted in many celebrities opting for this appealing package - including Katie Price (aka Jordan), Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt and Halle Berry.

Better looking – increased popularity?

Not only does having straight teeth improve a celebrity’s looks, but also increase their popularity – for the more aesthetically pleasing a celebrity is, the more in demand they will be. Events such as opening a huge concert or being a guest on a prime-time television show will guarantee the celebrity more coverage, which means more money and more publicity. Having three of the judges of the X-Factor with porcelain veneers has gained both themselves and the show’s massive ratings, and has also helped maximize their credibility on a global scale, with opportunities opening up across the Atlantic for Simon Cowell to take the X-Factor to the States as well as have Cheryl Cole join him out there as a fellow judge.

Though sometimes it is just the appearance of new teeth alone that gets celebrities on the front cover of magazines. When Simon Cowell had his teeth done his dental work came under fire with many critics remarking on how unnaturally white his teeth were, as well as how Miley Cyrus’s porcelain veneers seemed a lot larger than natural teeth. But for those wanting to keep it as natural they can take a bite out of Tom Cruise’s book and wear Invisalign. A series of clear braces helps straighten teeth discreetly, as well as being easily removable allowing the patient to take them out whilst eating and drinking. Lower in price as well as maintaining natural teeth, this has worked as a popular alternative for actress Katherine Heigl. “I got them because of this wonky tooth,” she said. “It’s awesome because every two weeks you switch to a new retainer. Pretty much the perfect way to describe Invisalign is Netflix for your teeth.”

But ultimately, undergoing dental treatment to achieve the perfect smile is not just for business, it’s for pleasure. “For people whose teeth are constantly making them feel self-conscious,” said Dr. Gause, “veneers are life-changing.”
